Help & FAQ
How can we help?
Short answers on setup, training and your data. As of 3 November 2026. Something missing? Write to hello@wattout.app. Diese Seite auf Deutsch lesen.
Quick start
Four steps to your first ride. wattout controls your smart trainer over Bluetooth (FTMS) and rides structured workouts: blocks with power targets that the trainer holds for you in ERG mode.
- Pair your trainer
Switch on the trainer, open the app. wattout finds trainer and chest strap and reconnects by itself next time.
- Enter your FTP
Every target is a percentage of your FTP. Set it in the settings.
- Pick a workout
Under "This week" you’ll find the planned workouts, plus your own and the library.
- Ride
Once power is live, start. The trainer holds the watts, you pedal.
Before the start
The app finds your last trainer and chest strap on its own. Three rings show power, cadence and heart rate; once power is live you can start. Without an FTP the app shows relative values only and cannot control the trainer.
In the player
The block and its target on top, live values in the middle, the profile with your position below. You adjust the intensity in 5 % steps. Pause and abort any time; an interrupted session can be resumed at the next start.
After the ride
A short rating (effort, feel), then the review. Under "Upload to" you choose where the ride also goes. With an account it lives in wattout Cloud and on all your devices.
The workout library
In the app under "Library" and on the web under Workouts you’ll find 117 workouts, the same ones the Coach plans from, named after category and level (e.g. "Load VII"). You can ride any of them or copy it into your own workouts. The library needs an account.
Your own workouts
Build your own workouts on the web at wattout.app/app → Workouts. They live in wattout Cloud and are ready on all your devices.
Setting up your devices
wattout runs on iPhone, iPad, Macs with Apple silicon, Apple TV and Android. One account keeps every device in sync.
iPhone and iPad
wattout comes from the App Store: open wattout.app/get/ios on the device and the link takes you straight to the app. On iPad, wattout shows more numbers, and in Connected the other riders sit in a side panel.
Mac with Apple silicon
Macs with Apple silicon run the iPad app. Install it from the Mac App Store, using the same link as for iPad: wattout.app/get/ios. Intel Macs are not supported.
Apple TV
The TV app comes from the App Store too: open wattout.app/get/tv on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, or search for wattout in the App Store on the Apple TV itself, signed in with the same Apple Account. Updates also come through the App Store.
You sign the TV in with your phone: it shows a QR code and a code. Scan the QR code, confirm the sign-in in the wattout app and check that the code matches the one on the TV. The TV then shows your planned workouts and the library, and the trainer connects to the Apple TV directly over Bluetooth. You can ride Connected on the TV as well; Apple Health is not available there.
Android
wattout is available on Android as early access through Google Play: open wattout.app/get/android on the device. wattout adapts to phones, tablets and foldables.
In the browser
At wattout.app/app you see your week and your rides, build your own workouts and manage your account. Riding happens in the apps.
wattout Coach Premium
The Coach plans a 12-week block from your goal, your time per week and your longest session, and keeps adapting the next 7 days. In the introductory phase it is unlocked for everyone until 28 February 2027.
How the plan is built
The phases are Base, Build, Peak and, with an event, Taper, otherwise Test; lighter recovery weeks are worked in. With an event 6 to 12 weeks out the plan ends with the event week; without an event it is always 12 weeks. The workouts come from the library and keep fixed names, so you recognise sessions.
When it adapts
After every ride and every rating the Coach adjusts the coming seven days automatically, and also when your recovery changes noticeably (at most once a day, and only if you rode in the last 14 days). The dashboard shows why, for example "adjusted this week to your recovery". The start date and the phases never move. If you withdraw your consent to AI planning, your plan stays but stops adapting.
Missed days? "Neu planen"
The Coach does not re-plan missed sessions by itself. A tap on "Neu planen" (re-plan) plans again from today, no new approval needed.
When a new plan needs your approval
Only your first plan, or a changed goal or event date, produces a new 12-week plan for you to approve; everything else the Coach applies directly.
Guard rails
At most two hard sessions a week, at least 48 hours between them, never more than four days in a row, recovery weeks built in, never above your weekly budget. The server checks these rules on every plan and every adjustment, wherever it comes from.
Does the Coach cost anything?
No, not in the introductory phase: until 28 February 2027 the Coach is free for everyone, including all Premium features. We will tell you in good time before that changes.
AI and your data: strictly separated
This matters to us: the AI model never gets your identity. From the wattout server only a pseudonymised extract goes to the model: FTP, maximum heart rate, goal, availability, experience and, if you give it, the age band; duration, intensity, RPE, feel and Pain of your recent rides; and, if you connected them, your recovery data (sleep duration, resting heart rate and HRV including the deviation from your normal value, plus, if available, your body weight purely for context) along with the date, sport, duration and load of your completed workouts from other sources. Recovery data and heart rate are health data; they go to the model only with your consent to AI planning. No email address, no IP address, no name, no account name, no free text, no device identifiers. The model provider may neither store the data nor train on it; we exclude providers that do not guarantee this. The Coach plans only with your consent for this; without it, the Coach cannot be set up.
Your recovery data
For adjustments the Coach reads sleep, resting heart rate and HRV, for the last 30 days and going forward, and passes them on pseudonymised to the AI model as described above. Where they come from is covered below under Apple Health and Google Health Connect.
Premium in the introductory phase Free
Introductory phase: all Premium features including the AI coach are free until 28 February 2027. Rides, workouts and Connected stay free.
During this time there is nothing to buy: you do not have to sign up for a subscription, nothing is billed, and nothing renews automatically. Nothing runs out that you would have to cancel.
What happens after 28 February 2027 we will decide later. Whether Premium then becomes paid, we will tell you in good time beforehand, here and in the app. You will not be charged anything without your consent.
wattout Connected Free
Ride a workout live with up to two friends: up to three riders per session, free. Everyone on their own trainer, at their own FTP, one shared start.
Create a session and invite
Under the two-people icon you create a session, pick the workout and share the link or the code. A tap on the code copies the invitation; open invitations last seven days. Whoever joins can ride the suggested workout, their own next planned one, or any other.
What the others see
In the lobby you decide per session what the others see: progress, relative power, Pain, cadence, heart rate, absolute watts. Heart rate and absolute watts are off by default.
Start
The host starts once they and at least one other rider are ready. Anyone not ready at the start doesn’t ride along this time and sees a notice.
No ranking
After the ride, what each rider did stands side by side. Different watts. Same pain.
On which devices?
On iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Apple TV. On iPad and large tablets the other riders sit in a side panel. On Apple TV you join with the code or pick the session in the CONNECTED row on Today; creating and inviting happens in the app.
Apple Health and Google Health Connect
wattout connects to Apple Health on iPhone and to Google Health Connect on Android. Reading is for the Coach (Premium); writing your rides back is free.
What wattout reads (Premium)
Sleep, resting heart rate and HRV, plus, if available, your body weight as context, each for the last 30 days and going forward. Whether your completed workouts from other apps are included is a separate choice. This data reaches the wattout server only with Premium, and only the Coach uses it.
What wattout writes (free)
After every ride you choose under "Upload to" whether it lands in Apple Health or Google Health Connect as a workout. Writing happens from your phone, not from the Apple TV. Change the preselection under Settings → Completed workouts.
Garmin on Android
Garmin does not write workouts to Google Health Connect, so on Android the Coach does not see your Garmin sessions. You can bring your wattout rides to Garmin Connect as a FIT file by email.
Changing permissions
You can withdraw these permissions any time in Apple Health or Google Health Connect.
Example: KICKR, Garmin watch and Garmin Connect
You have a Wahoo KICKR Core in the basement and a Garmin watch on your wrist. The workout comes from the Coach, the library or your own. During the ride the KICKR holds the power targets while wattout shows block, target, power, cadence, heart rate and Pain. Afterwards the Garmin uploads its own recording to Garmin Connect. If you would rather see the wattout ride there, send it to yourself as a FIT file by email and upload it to Garmin Connect. Rating and figures stay in wattout.
The Pain indicator
Pain is a number from 0 to 10 that shows during the ride how hard the last minutes were for you. Not a medical value and not a diagnosis of pain, but an estimate from three things:
Intensity
Your power relative to FTP, smoothed over the last seconds.
Heart rate
When a pulse and your maximum heart rate are known, the pulse is part of it. At identical power targets two people differ mostly here.
Accumulation
A long time above threshold pushes Pain up, recovery below lets it fall again. A target you miss by a wide margin counts as well.
From 7.5 the bar pulses. In Connected sessions the others see your Pain only if you share it. Pain is deterministic: the same data always gives the same value, no model and no AI is involved.
Your data: what goes where
Without an account everything stays on your device. With an account it lives on our servers in the EU and goes only where you send it.
Without an account
Trainer control, recording and FIT export run on the device. Nothing goes to wattout.
With an account
Your sessions, FTP and profile live on the wattout servers in the EU , so they are on all your devices. Heart rate and training data are health data; they are stored only with your explicit consent, and you can delete them, account included, at any time.
FIT file by email
Goes only to you: every finished ride you send yourself arrives as a FIT file at your account’s email address.
Coach AI
Gets, if you consent, pseudonymised training figures and, if connected, sleep, resting heart rate and HRV; no names, no addresses, no account names, no free text.
Support
At the bottom of every review there is a wattout ID. Tell it to us when you have a question; it finds the ride and the logs of the last 14 days, nothing older is kept.
Delete account
In the app under Settings → Privacy and account, or on the web; the steps and what is gone afterwards are on the page Delete your account.
Why we don’t ask for birth date, weight or sex
Many training apps want birth date, weight and sex. For planning indoor training by FTP they add little: targets are relative to your power, and the Coach reads load from your rides and your heart rate. At the same time they are data that identify a person easily, and with sex we do not want to put anyone in a box. We keep to data minimisation: what we do not need, we do not ask for.
What the Coach uses, optionally, is deliberately coarse: an age band in five-year steps, because age affects recovery and how intensity is built up, and the maximum heart rate, so the pulse can enter Pain. If your body weight is in Apple Health or Google Health Connect and you share it, the Coach uses it purely as context. Everything works without these, just less individually.

Frequently asked
How do I get wattout on Android?
As early access through Google Play until the app is released in the regular Play Store: join the Google group, activate early access and install the app. The three steps are on wattout.app/get/android. Updates then arrive automatically through Google Play.
Does my trainer work?
If it speaks Bluetooth FTMS with ERG mode, yes. Most current smart trainers do. wattout doesn’t support ANT+.
Do I need a heart-rate strap?
No, but it’s worth it: with heart rate and your maximum heart rate, Pain gets more accurate. wattout pairs Bluetooth chest straps.
Do I need an account?
Not to ride: trainer control, recording and FIT export work without one. You do for the library, wattout Cloud, Connected and the Coach. You sign in without a password, with a code sent by email.
What happens if the app crashes?
Your ride is recorded every second on the device and restored after a crash; you can resume an interrupted session at the next start. With an account every ride arrives in wattout Cloud exactly once.
What does wattout cost?
Riding, your own workouts, the library, Connected, wattout Cloud, the export to Apple Health and Google Health Connect and the FIT file by email are free. The Coach is free in the introductory phase too, until 28 February 2027, including all Premium features.
Why no virtual world?
Because it adds nothing to structured training and costs a lot. Virtual worlds need big studios, servers for thousands of concurrent riders, and are financed by subscriptions of 15 to 20 euros a month. For an interval session what counts is that the trainer holds the targets exactly, that you see your numbers clearly, and that the ride ends up where you analyse it. That is what wattout does, without a graphics card and without a subscription for scenery.
How do you stay motivated without a screen world?
With a plan. Deciding every day whether and what to ride wears you down fast. The Coach takes that decision off you: the next workout is set on the dashboard, matched to goal, time and your last session. You only have to get on. Add Connected: agree on a time with friends, each on their own trainer, and the appointment holds.
Am I locked into wattout?
No. wattout is deliberately not a closed system. We support proven platforms such as Apple Health, Google Health Connect and the ecosystems of the wearable makers instead of replacing them. You can send every finished ride to yourself as a standard FIT file, to your account’s email address, and upload it to Garmin Connect, Strava, Komoot and the like if you want. Your calendar stays your calendar. Stop tomorrow and you lose nothing.
